ARC president Jason Wall reported strong interest in the carnival from the local New England and Central North clubs as well as teams travelling from as far away as Strathfield in Sydney and Newcastle.

“Local Armidale clubs appear to have recruited well in the off season with Robb College and the Armidale Blues fielding two sides and St Alberts College fielding three sides in the tournament,” Wall reported to The Leader.

“This year’s knockout looks like being one of the most open in a number of years with a number of strong sides attending. Tamworth Pirates will be back to defend their title as winners of last year’s knockout in which they defeated the hosts The Armidale Blues 19-12 in the final.

“Over the years the knockout has been a good indicator for clubs of their form leading into regular season competition and many clubs use the knockout matches to trial players.

“There is also a strong financial drawcard for clubs that do well in the knockout with The Armidale Rugby Club providing around $8000 prize money for the carnival with the winners of the event to take away $3000 for their efforts over the weekend.”

Wall said his club was thankful for the generous support of its sponsors, The Wicklow Hotel, New England Mutual and Landmark who had made the KO possible for many years.

The weekend of rugby will be topped off with an evening of festivities at the Wicklow Hotel on Saturday night while the final will be staged around 2.30pm on Sunday.

n Entry on both days will be $4 per person. Further details can be gained from Jason Wall (0409 994614).
