Firefighters from Bega, Dorrigo, south Broken Hill, Yass, Lithgow, Tamworth, Central Coast (including Wyong), Trangie, Kelso, Dubbo, and Rural Fire Services from Parkes and Katingal, are amongst those vying for regional glory.

NSW Fire commissioner Greg Mullens will be in Forbes on Saturday to open the event.

The championships will kick off with an educational morning for students of Forbes’ three public schools and Bedgerabong Public.

The children will be taken through fire education, evacuation and assembly points, and will get to witness a fat fire simulator (simulating for example a kitchen fire with cooking fat) and the different ways in which water can affect fires.

Members of the community are urged to come down and watch, with a grandstand set up for the audience and a canteen in operation on Saturday.

Competing in the championships is a strong tradition for Forbes crews – the competition has been going for well over a century. There is even a championship trophy at the station from 1904.

They are a great opportunity to encourage the fire safety message, hone their skills and network with firefighters from all around the state.

“The stuff we do on the track reflects what we do in a fire situation, as part of our day-to-day activities,” Forbes Fire Brigade organising committee member Andrew Rousell said.

The event will kick off with the educational day with local school children and a registration and information at Forbes Sport and Recreation Club.

Competition will be held Saturday and Sunday at Stephan Field, with another formal gathering to be held at the club on Saturday night.

Mr Rousell said several local businesses had got on board with sponsorship, andtheir support was vital and greatly appreciated. Major sponsors are Forbes Shire Council, Vast Solar and Evolution Mining (Cowal).
