Chelsea has worked to ensure the Cathy Freeman Foundation is the official charity organisation supported at the Stawell Gift –which is hosted in Stawell each year.

The year 12 student hasformed a partnership with Stawell Athletics Club, her school and the foundation to run the fundraiser every year from now on.

The Cathy Freeman Foundation works with 1600 indigenous children and their families by partnering with four remote indigenous communities.

The programs focus on improving school attendance, behaviour and literacy with students from pre-school to year 12.

This year marks 20 years since gold medal Olympian Cathy Freeman ran at the Stawell Gift.

Chelsea said herself and a group of friends will be fundraising for the foundationat the Stawell Gift on Easter weekend.

“The money goes towards closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous education in Australia,” she said.

“It is something pretty close to me, being an indigenous person myself.”

Chelsea said she and her friends would be running raffles and shaking collection tins during the Easter weekend.

“I’ve got about 20 volunteers, including teachers to come and help,” she said.

She said she hadn’t set a monetary goal and just wanted to raise as much money as possible.

Stawell Secondary College VCAL co-ordinator Chad Frost said Chelsea had been driving the project since last year.
